Resource / Managed WordPress hosting

Three hosts worth paying for, and how to tell which one is right for you.

We are not going to list twenty. We run client sites on these, we will say what each one is bad at, and four questions below will name one. If the answer turns out to be that you would rather not think about hosting at all, that is the fourth option and we do that too.

01

Where the server is, and how close

Time to first byte is mostly geography and caching, not the plan name.

A $40 host with a server near your customers beats a $120 host three time zones away. If your traffic is global, what you want is edge caching, not a bigger box.

02

Who patches the server

Managed means someone else handles the operating system, PHP, and the stack.

This is the line between hosting and server rental. If nobody is named, the answer is you, at 11pm, on a Sunday.

03

What happens when it breaks

Support response time, and whether they will look at WordPress or stop at the server.

Most hosts will say “not our scope” at the first plugin conflict. That is fair, and it is also why a plan and a host are different purchases.

04

Cost per site, not cost per plan

Twelve sites on one panel is a very different number from twelve plans.

This is where the three below genuinely separate, and it is the question most comparison posts skip entirely.

The short way

Four questions, one answer.

These are the four things that actually change the recommendation. The last one changes it most, and it can override the other three.

01 / How many sites are we talking about?
02 / What would hurt most if it went wrong?
03 / Where are your visitors?
04 / Who is going to look after it?
Our pick for that answer

Your pick shows here.

Answer all four questions.

A second option will show here.

Our first pick

xCloud.host

You own the servers. xCloud runs them.

Right for

Agencies, anyone running more than two sites, anyone who wants to own the infrastructure

A server management panel that sits on top of cloud providers you already trust: DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, AWS, Linode. You pay the cloud provider for the hardware and xCloud for the panel, and you can put as many sites on a server as it will carry. It is the stack we run our own work on.

+ Best cost per site once you pass three or four sites
+ You keep the servers, so leaving is a migration you control
+ Pick the datacenter, so you can sit next to your customers
+ Staging, backups, and one click SSL handled by the panel
– You are choosing a server size, which is one more decision
– Support covers the panel, not your plugin conflict

For the big ones

Cloudways

Managed cloud without touching a terminal.

Right for

One large, busy site that needs more server than usual

Cloudways sits in the same category as xCloud, but it is where we put really large sites: heavy traffic, a big database, or a store that has to scale up without anyone rebuilding the server. You pick a cloud provider inside their interface, they manage the stack, and resizing takes a few clicks. It costs more per site than xCloud, so it earns its place when the site is big enough to need it.

+ Everything billed in one place
+ Server management genuinely handled, not just scripted
+ Several cloud providers and regions to pick from
+ Easy to hand to a client without handing over much
– Costs more per site than running the same server yourself
– Less control over the stack than the panel model above

When speed is the product

Rocket.net

Enterprise CDN on every plan, from the first dollar.

Right for

One high traffic site, a store, or anything where a slow page costs real money

Per site managed WordPress hosting with Cloudflare Enterprise included rather than sold as an upgrade. That is the whole pitch and it is a strong one: the content is cached at the edge worldwide, so time to first byte is low everywhere, not just near the origin. Priced per site, which is excellent for one important site and expensive for twenty.

+ Fastest out of the box of the three, with no tuning
+ Enterprise CDN and WAF included, not an add on
+ Support that will actually look at WordPress
+ Nothing to configure, which is the point
– Per site pricing adds up fast across a portfolio
– Less room to tune, because the stack is theirs

The fourth option

We host it

No host to choose, no second invoice to chase.

Right for

Anyone building with us on a Growth Plan, or on a Care Plan who would rather hand the whole thing over

If we build your site or run your plan, hosting is included and we run it on the same stack we recommend above. You stop being the person in the middle between a hosting company and whoever built the site, which is the position where every outage turns into a two day email thread about whose fault it is.

+ Hosting, updates, backups and monitoring on one invoice
+ One phone number when something is wrong, and it is ours
+ Staging that matches production, because we built both
+ You still own the site, and we hand over a full export on request
– Only available with a Growth Plan or a Care Plan, not sold on its own

Not a hosting company. Hosting is part of the work, not the product.

Before you move anything

Changing host fixes a slow server. It does not fix a slow site.

Most of the time a site is slow, the host is not the reason. It is thirty plugins, uncompressed images, a page builder rendering four nested containers deep, and no caching configured properly. Moving all of that to a faster server makes it slightly less slow and costs you a migration.

So the honest order is: find out why it is slow, fix that, and then pick a host that will not undo the work. If you are not sure which one you have, we will tell you free in a site review, and we will tell you to stay where you are if that is the answer.

One more thing

If we build it, we host it.

Every Growth Plan includes hosting on the stack above. One invoice, one number to call, and nobody to blame but us.
